Headaches During Pregnancy

Headaches During Pregnancy in women can often be triggered by a change in hormones during pregnancy. Pregnant women may experience an increase or decrease in the number of headaches. Frequent, unexplained headaches later in pregnancy may be a sign of a more serious condition called pre-eclampsia, so you should inform your physician if this is the case.

Almost all women get headaches early in pregnancy, but it's no fun having a headache during pregnancy. Besides, controlling headaches is very difficult during the first trimester of pregnancy, when you should avoid many medications. If your headache is a tension headache or a full-blown migraine, there are some things you should know, including finding out what causes the headache.

Causes of pregnancy headaches?

The causes of headache are not always well defined. During the first trimester, changes in hormone levels and blood volume can influence the outcome. A general and acute headache can be accompanied by stress, fatigue and eye strain.

Sinus headaches may be more susceptible to the nasal congestion and runny nose that are common in early pregnancy. Also, hunger and low blood sugar can cause headaches during pregnancy.

Women who stop drinking coffee and soda in the morning may suffer from caffeine withdrawal headaches. Women who also have nausea and vomiting early in pregnancy may become dehydrated. This can also cause headaches.

Migraine headaches are a common type of headache during pregnancy. These sharp, stabbing headaches are usually felt on one side of the head and are a result of distended blood vessels in the brain. Sometimes they are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. A small percentage of women with migraine also have a migraine aura. They see flashes of light or feel tingling in their arms and legs.

The headaches can sometimes be a sign of pre-eclampsia, a condition that affects certain pregnant women, usually starting at 20 weeks of pregnancy or soon after delivery. Pre-eclampsia can lead to serious complications if it is not controlled and treated in time.

There are other causes of headaches during pregnancy:

1.- Not getting enough sleep
2.- Absence of caffeine (eg, from coffee, tea, or cola drinks)
3.- Low blood sugar
4.- Dehydration
5.- Feeling stressed out
6.- Poor positioning, especially as your baby grows
7.- Depression or Anxiety

Headache Treatment

There are many types of headaches. Chronic daily headaches, which occur 15 days or more per month, are one subtype. Tension-type headaches and migraines are also common subtypes of headaches but require completely different treatments so it is advisable to visit your doctor for help in treating them.

Tips For Combating Headaches During Pregnancy

Most headaches are generally considered tension headaches and are usually described as a tight band of pain around the head and sometimes in the back of the neck. Emotional factors (such as stress) often cause them, although there are also a wide range of physical causes. Eye fatigue (from poor lighting or sitting too long at a computer), for example, can cause headaches. Sinus headaches (pain behind the forehead, cheeks, or bridge of the nose) are less common, but occur if an infection or allergy causes an inflammation that blocks mucus drainage from the nose.

Migraine headaches also occur. If you've had them, you know that the word "headache" does not describe debilitating pain, which is often associated with nausea or sensitivity to light or noise. A wide range of things can trigger migraines, including changes in the weather, menstrual cycles, and certain types of foods.

Talk to your doctor about your headaches. Let him or her know if you plan to take a new medication or if these natural remedies do not relieve your headache. If your headaches increase or are more persistent, or if they are different from the headaches you normally experience, tell your doctor immediately.

Take a shower or a warm bath. Steam helps clean out the airways, sometimes causing headaches.

Drink liquids: it is essential to stay hydrated to avoid headaches.
